Progress and Priorities 2008-09

Progress and Priorities 2008-09

Despite continuing challenges, 2007 proved to be another excellent year for travel and tourism - the fourth consecutive year of healthy growth. In fact since 2004, the annual increase in travel and tourism economy GDP has averaged four percent in real terms - faster than that of the global economy overall. And in the same period, travel and tourism has created more than 34 million jobs.
Although growth is expected to slow in 2008, in line with the recent deterioration in the economic Environment in developed economies, led by the USA, WTTC forecasts - developed in collaboration with our research partner Oxford Economics - are still remarkably positive, pointing to a 3percent increase in travel and tourism economy GDP and six million additional travel and tourism economy jobs worldwide. WTTC publication discusses the progress and priorities of travel and tourism industry. The publications can be downloaded (in PDF format) from the WTTC site.

Maximising China's Tourism Potential

With the world's attention firmly on China (PRC) in the run-up to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has produced a landmark report on how the country's tourism potential can be maximised. Endorsed by the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), and sponsored by Visa, 'Realising China's Tourism Potential, Recommendations for Future Development' is the first definitive international study that presents a roadmap for growth and management of the USD100bn industry.
Poised to become the world's most popular tourist destination within a decade, mainland China stands to benefit not only from international tourist arrivals but also a massive increase in domestic tourism as the country's economy booms.
The report, researched and written by experts across the travel and tourism industry spectrum, focuses on six key market segments, namely: Meetings and Conventions; Incentive Travel; Cruising; Red Tourism, Green Tourism; and Health & Wellness Tourism. These segments are identified in China's 11th Five Year Tourism Plan as major pillars that will support the long-term prosperity and sustainability of travel and tourism.
Realising China's Tourism Potential is the latest milestone in PATA's long-term partnership with CNTA. Last year PATA cooperated closely with CNTA to produce English language extracts and a summary report of The 11th Five-Year Plan for the China Travel Industry.
Realising China's Tourism Potential is being published in English and Chinese, and is available from PATA by contacting publications@PATA.org.

Malay Archipelago

Malay Archipelago

The Malay Archipelago is a classic travel book that chronicles the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace's scientific exploration of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and New Guinea between 1854 and 1862. An intrepid explorer who earned his living by collecting bird skins, Wallace also catalogued the vast number of plant and animal species that inhabited this unique geographical area. In addition he includes numerous observations on the people, their languages, and ways of living and social organisation as well as geological insights into the nature and activity of volcanoes and the destructive force of nature. Colourful personal anecdotes based on experiences during his travels also pepper the text. First published in 1869, "The Malay Archipelago" provided some of the initial evidence of the modern theory of evolution.
