Kerala Tourism to Have "Awards Day" from Next Year
From next year onwards, September 27, international tourism day, will also be the ‘Tourism Awards Day’ in Kerala. Starting from next year the state tourism awards will be distributed on September 27, said Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister for Tourism, Government of Kerala. The awards function would be a bigger and grandeur event. He was speaking at a function organized in Kochi to give away the state tourism awards for the year 2007-2008. From next year there would be awards for responsible tourism practices, destination management and tourism friendly village, he added. The minister who presided over the function also said that Kerala has recorded a 17 per cent growth in tourist arrivals during the last season, as compared to the year before. Union Minister of State for Agriculture K.V. Thomas who inaugurated the function said that tourist arrivals to Kerala, Karnataka and Goa were growing faster than to the erstwhile tourist hubs like Delhi and Rajasthan. Among the States, Kerala has become a model to the rest of India because of innovative projects to woo tourists, he added.
KTDC Chairman Cherian Philip, Kochi Mayor Mercy Williams, Kerala Tourism Director Dr V Venu IAS, Kerala Tourism Director M Shivasankar IAS, Dinesh Mani MLA, Dominic Presentaion MLA, KTM Chairman Riaz Ahmed, ATE CMD E M Najeeb and Austin Varghese were also present on the occasion. Awards were given away to winners in 29 categories.
